How to renovate old buildings that have undergone the baptism of history and time, while preserving their historical texture, enhancing their image, updating their functions, and coordinating with the surrounding environment?
Lafayette Culture Space traces its origins to the Lafayette Cinema, designed by Laszlo Hudec and completed in 1933. Over its history, the building underwent multiple functional transformations and a complete reconstruction (2006-2009).
History information
Although the Lafayette Art and Design Center was rebuilt in the style of the Hudec Theater, there are many differences. Its function and image are no longer sufficient to meet the needs of modern cultural and artistic centers. The front facade of the building runs along the street and is surrounded by buildings on three sides. The east, west, and south facades are difficult to renovate, and the main focus is on renovating the street facing facade. Due to the non historical preservation of the building, the owner wishes to plan a comprehensive renovation incorporating digital technology。
Original front facade
The façade renovation is conceptualized as "The Shadow Masks in the Urban Theatre," Due to the residential buildings directly opposite Lafayette, direct use of LED lights or conventional screens was prohibited. The solution combines perforated aluminum panels with acrylic backing to house rear-projected LED dot matrix lights. At night, light illuminates through the perforations, allowing subtle yet vivid projections.

The perforations between adjacent folded panels cascade in angular waves, sweeping across the facade in a rhythmic flow. Like streaks of time, they cloak the surface in ever-shifting plays of light and shadow.

Using acrylic panels as a medium, embedding LED dot matrix screens or transparent OLEDs to achieve dynamic information display, utilizing the semi transparency of acrylic to subtly reveal the original facade details, and strengthening historical lines through lighting at night.

In addition, through CNC engraving or hot bending processes, three-dimensional textures (such as artistic patterns and data visualization graphics) are formed on the surface of acrylic, paired with color changing LED light strips on the back. During the day, it is a decorative relief, and at night, it is transformed into a light and shadow art wall. The gridded storefront created by Donchamp for McDonald's is an artistic presentation.
The acrylic grille design of McDonald's front door has been finely carved by Donchamp on its back, giving the grille a unique texture and form. The back has undergone special treatment with sandblasting technology, resulting in a diffuse scattering effect of light that is soft and not glaring
In terms of production process, acrylic is fixed on the back without any visible fasteners on the front, creating a soft and elegant overall appearance. This unique light and shadow effect not only enhances the nighttime recognition of McDonald's stores, but also adds a sense of elegance and modernity.
